The 720S made McLaren a serious rival to Ferrari and Lamborghini, and it's now one of the most common used McLarens. With the 750S replacing it in 2023, buyers have an obvious benchmark, so condition, options and warranty decide where your car lands.

This page is specific to the 720S. For other McLarens and the full comparison of ways to sell, see the main McLaren guide.

Which 720S do you have?

  • 720S Coupe

    2017–2023

A 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with McLaren's hydraulically linked Proactive Chassis Control II suspension. Luxury and Performance trims change the interior and some exterior details.

  • 720S Spider

    2019–2023

A retractable-hardtop version with nearly identical performance. An electrochromic glass roof panel was optional. Buyers check that the roof operates smoothly.

  • 765LT and 765LT Spider

    2020–2023

The lighter, more powerful Longtail, limited to 765 coupes and 765 Spiders. It sells as a collectible, and buyers focus on miles, options and history.

  • 750S

    2023–present

The 720S replacement. Its arrival has made buyers more price-sensitive on 720S cars, and many owners trade a 720S toward one.

What 720S buyers check first

  1. WarrantyMcLaren's factory warranty and extended warranty make a big difference on a car this complex. Have the paperwork and end dates ready.
  2. Options and MSOFront lift, carbon fiber exterior and interior packs, sports exhaust, Bowers & Wilkins audio, lightweight wheels, and McLaren Special Operations (MSO) paint or trim.
  3. Service and softwareAnnual retailer servicing, plus records of recalls and software updates.
  4. Fault historyBuyers will run a diagnostic scan. Having old warnings investigated and cleared by a retailer before you sell avoids surprises.
  5. ConditionFront-end paint, carbon fiber condition, dihedral door operation, wheels and interior wear.

Where to sell a 720S

  • Most 720S coupes and Spiders

Specialist exotic buyers or a McLaren retailer. Retailers buy for McLaren Qualified and favor recent cars with full history and warranty. Specialists are often stronger on higher-mile or out-of-warranty cars.

  • 765LT and 765LT Spider

Auction, or a specialist in limited McLarens. Low miles and a strong spec drive competitive bidding.

  • Trading toward a 750S or Artura

A retailer trade-in is convenient and may carry a sales tax credit in your state. Compare it with an outright offer after tax.

Documents that add value

  • Warranty or extended warranty documents with end dates
  • Retailer service records, including software updates and recalls
  • Original specification sheet, including MSO items
  • Both keys, the car cover and battery conditioner
  • Original parts if the car has been modified

Common questions

Can I extend the warranty before selling my 720S?

Often, yes, if the car qualifies. McLaren's extended warranty can be bought through retailers for eligible cars and is generally transferable, which can make the car easier to sell. Get a quote and compare it with the difference it makes to offers.

Is a 720S Spider worth more than the coupe?

It depends on the car. Spiders cost more new, and demand is often stronger in warm-weather states. Compare offers for your exact car rather than relying on a rule.

Has the 750S hurt 720S values?

A replacement model generally makes buyers of the outgoing car more price-sensitive. Well-optioned, documented 720S cars with warranty still sell well.

Who buys used 720S cars?

McLaren retailers buying for their Qualified pre-owned program, specialist exotic buyers who purchase nationwide, auction bidders and private enthusiasts.
