How to sell your Ford GT

First generation or second, standard or heritage edition: how a Ford GT is valued, what collectors check, and where to sell it.

The Ford GT was a collector car from the day it was sold. The 2005–2006 cars were built in a limited run, and the 2017–2022 cars were sold by application only, in even smaller numbers. Buyers know the production details, check originality closely, and pay most for low-mile cars with the right options or a special edition.

Because the pool of buyers is national, and often international, most Ford GTs sell through specialist dealers and auctions rather than local Ford dealers.

Specialist exotic buyer●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●Collector-car and exotic specialists who know the GT can make quick, firm offers and handle nationwide transport.
Brand dealer●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●Most Ford dealers don't specialize in used GTs, so treat a dealer offer as a floor, not a target.

How buyers look at each Ford GT model

  • Ford GT (first generation)

    2005–2006

A supercharged 5.4-liter V8 with a six-speed manual, built in a run of about 4,000 cars. There were only four factory options: a McIntosh stereo, racing stripes, forged BBS wheels and painted brake calipers. Buyers count them, so know exactly which ones your car has.

  • 2006 Heritage Edition

    2006

The Gulf-inspired blue and orange livery honoring the GT40's Le Mans wins, built in limited numbers. One of the most valuable first-generation GTs.

  • Ford GT (second generation)

    2017–2022

A twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 in a carbon fiber body, sold by application to roughly 1,350 buyers. Early buyers signed an agreement restricting resale for 24 months. Essentially every car is now past that window, but keep the paperwork.

  • Second-generation special editions

    2017–2022

Heritage Editions honoring Le Mans-era GT40s, plus the Carbon Series, Competition Series, Studio Collection and final LM Edition. Each carries a premium, and buyers check that edition-specific parts and documents are all present.

What moves the price

  1. OriginalityOriginal paint, unmodified parts and every original component. Collectors pay most for cars as they left the factory.
  2. MileageLow miles carry a large premium, but a car that has sat needs fresh fluids and tires, and buyers price that in.
  3. Options and editionOn 2005–2006 cars, which of the four options are fitted. On 2017–2022 cars, the edition, carbon fiber wheels and exposed-carbon packages.
  4. DocumentationWindow sticker, original sales paperwork and, for 2017–2022 cars, the ownership agreement and any build documents.
  5. Service and recall historyDealer records for recalls and maintenance. Buyers will check for open recalls by VIN.

How to sell a Ford GT, step by step

  1. Gather the details: VIN, mileage, options, photos of every angle and the interior, and your service records.
  2. Get written offers from two or three buyers who handle Ford GTs. Send each one the same details so the offers are comparable.
  3. Inspection. The buyer confirms the car matches your description, either through a local inspector or a detailed video call.
  4. Agree the final number and paperwork. Get the price, any deductions, the transport arrangements and the payment timing in writing.
  5. Payment, then pickup. Funds (or your loan payoff) are confirmed, then an enclosed transporter collects the car and you sign over the title.

Ford GT buyers usually want a specialist inspection and a full photo set before committing, and they arrange enclosed transport. For auction sales, ask about timing: the major collector auctions run on a calendar, so plan around consignment deadlines.

Selling a Ford GT with a loan or lease

Most Ford GT owners who sell still have a loan or lease on the car. That doesn't stop a sale; it adds one step.

  1. Get a payoff quote from your lender or leasing company. Ask for a 10-day payoff figure and the exact payment instructions.
  2. Give it to the buyer. A professional buyer pays your lender directly and sends you whatever is left. That's your equity.
  3. If you owe more than the offer, you pay the difference (negative equity) before the title can transfer.
  4. For a lease, check first whether your leasing company allows a third-party buyout. Some only let the original dealer buy the car.

Keep copies of the payoff confirmation and the lien release. The full loan and lease walkthrough covers the paperwork in more detail.

What to have ready

  • Title, or your lender's details if there is a loan
  • Valid registration and a government-issued photo ID
  • All keys and fobs
  • Service records, organized by date
  • Owner's manuals and books
  • Window sticker showing factory options
  • Original sales documents and, for 2017–2022 cars, the ownership agreement
  • Edition-specific items and documents for heritage and special editions

Common questions

What options did the 2005–2006 Ford GT have?

Just four: a McIntosh sound system, racing stripes, forged BBS wheels and painted brake calipers. Cars with all four are often called four-option cars and are generally the most sought after.

Can I sell my 2017–2022 Ford GT?

Yes. Original buyers agreed not to resell within 24 months of delivery. The last cars were delivered in 2022, so nearly every car is now past that period, but check your own agreement and keep it with the car's records.

Where do Ford GTs sell for the most?

Usually at well-marketed collector-car auctions or through specialists with collector clients. Local Ford dealers rarely offer the strongest price.

Does mileage really matter that much on a Ford GT?

Yes. The GT is bought mainly by collectors, and low-mile cars sell for clear premiums. Higher-mile cars still find buyers when they're well documented and priced realistically.
